Nelscott Reef Contest

So, I decided to go watch the nelscott reef content in Lincoln City for like an hour or earlier… oh man. Driving down the little canyon I saw peter Mel and his crew getting ready to ski out to the reef. It was exciting to see some known faces – kind of validates this region as a good surfing destination.

The sets were in the 35 – 40 feet range. Surfers were tiny on the waves. From the cliff, it seemed as if the waves were 10 feet out there, but once a jetski would be pulling in someone into a wave and once this someone would pump, fade and go down the face, there was some serious 5 to 6 times overhead walls to be seen. And the surfers were just doing tricks we’d do on small waves. Tearing them like they were our 4 feet sunny pacific city surf. Crazy.

I think another fun part for me was to watch their amazing wave dodging skills as they battled the 15 foot insiders to ski out to the reef. It always looks small and easy from up high, but once someone is standing in front of a wave or flying off the top, size out there just takes on a whole new perspective. A scary one quite frankly. I saw some chilling wipeouts. Don’t even try figuring whether the surfer is making it back up to the surface: you just couldn’t tell.

The crowd on top of the cliff was fairly thin – which created this very relaxed, comfortable vibe up there. There were three watch spots, I checked all them out and ended up on the tallest one near the commentators - which were drinking wine straight out of the bottle as they were narrating the event. A few people from the Pacific City crew were standing along watching the huge surf. And of course, a whole bunch of oooohhs and aaahs were accompanying each set. Really fun stuff.

Now, I am back in pacific city, watching Gerry Lopez trying to surf the waves here, but they aren’t really doing their magic. Tomorrow and Saturday will be better.

Sunday and Monday were classic good surf, ended up at seaside for the late afternoon/evening the point was 6' to 8' (faces) west swell, head to head and a half high with the occasional larger set waves, powerful fun point break surf with light offshores ESE, a little crowded with up to 22 people out at one point and only one real take off spot and a 10 minute wait between good sets. the cove looked perfect for fun longboard waves, head high a little soft and shortish rides but same glassy conditions with the crowd spread out and the sets staggered for an easy paddle out. Sunday was the better day of the two, bigger and glassier. After this next storm cycle would like to find 1 or 2 people to share gas out to the coast,

Here's another video of some really fun surf. It was glassy and I was the only one out. In fact, Ive never seen anyone out here. If it were 2 feet bigger, this place would be amazing. I did get in on a few head high set's that walled up really nice.

Pacific City Rocks

Yesterday, Ant and I went to Pacific City not expecting much. We were heading to Indian until we got a call from a friend telling us Indian was tiny. So as we rolled up into the hundreds of tourists, and of course it looked tiny from the parking lot. We did notice however that way south of the Resturant there looked like some decent size bowl up sections. As we got closer, it got bigger. As we paddled out, there were some amazing overhead bowl up glassy sections we had to paddle through. I caught some long "weaker strenth" rights and a few big drop powerful lefts. It was one of the great summer sessions I remember so well from last Summer. As the day got later, the wind picked up and the swell died down. Now is the time to get out if you love "Fun" surf. All week it's gonna be around 5 feet........see you out there!

Why Portland Rocks.

Not to defer from Surfing too much, I just want to give a shout out to P-Town. So I went out last night, the first time in months. We ended up at a club in SE Portland around Burnside and 5th somewhere called "The Bus Depo" or something. Anyway, as I stumbled my way through the crowd of 23 year olds, I realized something. The Fashion in SE is "Whacky" to say the least. I composed a list of a few things you need to be considered cool in SE.
1.) a full sleeve of tattoo's
2.) an old ten-speed bike with razor thin tires
3.) a lesbian friend
4.) become a vegan
5.) Have a Masters degree educated in microbrews.
Anyway, the fashion was awesome, Just plain Goofy. Not pretention, Just Goofy.
The club was playing 40's dance music and everyone was having a good time.
I was mentioning to my friend how if you wanted to dress up fancy and go out, all you have to do is cross the River and go into the Pearl or NW. And even more upscale, go Downtown. We have it all here. What ever mood your in, you can find somewhere in Portland. Not to mention one of the best Music and Beer Scenes in America (not to mention the Surf). Portland rocks.

Surf Fog

Last weekend I paddled out at Pac City around 7 p.m. There was one guy out. The sun was faint in the distance, and the fog was out in full force. I think the fog was keeping alot of people out of the water. The waves were shoulder high and super clean. Mostly close out sets but once in a while a nice right would come through. Alot of guys don't like the fog. It creep's them out, and is definitley dangerous in bigger surf. But there's always clean surf with fog. Wind blows the fog out. So if there's fog, there's usually no wind. It was amazing to be past the break, with a few friends, as the sun was going down, in a very surreal environment of thick fog. I could see the blur of a campfire on the beach. The water was relativley warm.....Surf Fog is a good thing.
